for these, i would forego my flats

two facts about me

1) i am not a shoe person. i do not lust after louboutins. i mean, that’s not to say that if someone was like, oh hi, would you like a pair of these red-soled wonders, i would reply with pshaww no thanks. i would take them immediately and then brag about them to everyone, and then probably try to pair them with everything in my closet, including my victoria’s secret PINK sweatpants. but, in general, i dont stop and gawk at shoe displays in  boutique windows. i dont earmark pages in magazines with a pair of pumps i absolutely must own. and i own, legit, one pair of “fancy” shoes. they are a pair of bcbg heels that are pretty awesome but that i only wear on the most awesome days of the year, which is usually just my birthday.

2) i do not count kristen stewart as one of my style inspirations. i dont think i really need to elaborate on that point.

however, i came across these, and my whole world was turned upside down. for these, i could definitely become a shoe person. a very enthusiastic one.

and also, well done, k-stew.

a winning combination

between the ages of 3 and 5, i was such a little makeup maven. i had this doll-sized lipstick, that came in a sparkly pink case, a blush palette in the shape of a heart, and last but certainly not least, i was OBsessed with long nails. long, red nails to be exact (my preschool teacher sally had gorgeous nails that were perpetually painted red. she may have been my very first style icon).

and then, somehow, the tomboy switch got turned on, and from age 6 to roughly age 16, i was…not so girly anymore. im not so sure what exactly went on, but i definitely know i lived in the same yellow tshirt every weekend, and id pair it with overalls and bell bottoms and basically anything at all, because well, what doesn’t go with a yellow tshirt? exactly.

and then around the middle of high school, i remembered that i liked to pretty myself up. and then a few years later, during one of my prep-for-college shopping trips to the mall with my mom, i remembered that makeup existed

my first real, “grown up” makeup purchase was the prescriptives moonbeam eyeliner in beaming plum. man, i was in love with the moonbeams. and then they were discontinued, and i didnt think id love a liner again, until the nars larger than life longwear eyeliner came into existence (and my infatuation with that is already well-documented)

so! to recap: i love eyeliner. i love nars. and, while i’m listing my loves, my absolute go-to magazine for train rides and lazy saturday afternoon coffee shop visits is allure.

clearly, it makes sense that the announcement of this makes me giddy to no end:

bon voyage! arrivederci! je suis perdue!

i am notorious for getting lost. for going west when i should be going east. for trying to use bloomingdales as a compass instead of the empire state bldg, etc…

it wasnt until about two years ago that i finally figured out how my direction-savvy roommate could orient herself so quickly coming out of the subway. when the numbers are getting bigger, that’s NORTH. when they’re getting smaller, that’s SOUTH. yea. that took more time than i’d care to admit to finally click for me. and still, that only has me covered while im in manhattan. and not even all of manhattan, because you cannot imagine how turned around i get once i venture into soho which i guess is just too cool to have numbered streets.

anyways. this might come in handy.

created by the brains behind brooklyn’s Designhype, tiffany burnette, the nyc metro cuff became such a cult favorite that it spawned designs for its international confusing-to-navigate-metropolis counterparts , from paris to milan.

so, ive never traveled outside the US (unless you count canada, which, well, none of my friends/acquaintances/strangers i strike up convos with about traveling, have). but im thinking it might be necessary to stock up on basically all of these cuffs since they’re much more convenient to tote around than travel guides. legitimate justification, i know.

thank you, tiffany burnette, for making the label “tourist” synonymous with “unbelievably hip”

some days i just feel a little…

i know for a fact that i wear my heart on my sleeve. so i might as well wear my emotions on my wrist too.

Q is for…a quirky love story

i love a good love story. what i love even more is a good love story gone bad. which is the premise of Q: A (Timeless) Love Story, by Evan Mandery. Right before his wedding day, the protagonist is met by his supposed future self, who warns him that he cannot marry his fiancée, the “Q” of the title.

The hero-with-no-name is then met by a series of future-selves who lead him on a series of life-altering paths, like going to law school, then leaving law school; marrying someone else, then divorcing them; taking up the cello, the guitar, running

(side note – this might be the most jaw-dropping life decision he makes, in my opinion. a good number of my close friends are runners, and some of our conversations go like this:
me: oh, so you went for a run this morning?
friend-who-must-have-been-gazelle-in-past-life: yeah, but it wasn’t a tough one, just 12 miles
i then proceed to pass out at the mere thought of running 12 miles first thing in the morning. or, ever. )

anyways, what i love about this setup is how it indulges in potentials. how many times have you thought, okay, well, in another lifetime, i would do X, Y, Z?

for me,

X = go to medical school and become a psychiatrist

Y = stick with figure skating. or tennis. (the two athletic pursuits that i could do one better than just get the ‘most improved’ award for)

Z = learn to play the drums (well that one i’m not discounting just yet)

(image via Barnes & Noble)

obviously, you can’t live 3 lifetimes over. but Q: A (Timeless) Love Story makes it seem sort of possible that you can live 3 (or more) lifetimes in just 1 lifetime.

i’m only about 30 pages in, but i’m already lusting to see what other stories Evan Mandery has come up with

keep it colorful, keep it classy

i used to be really into tie-dye. i mean, really into tie-dye. as in, i’d tie-dye my own tshirts. and the tie-dyed beanie baby (remember those?) was my favorite, no contest. between the ages of ten and thirteen, i harbored a desire to go back in time and live in the 60s. i remember being incredibly excited when VH1 aired that mini-series, The 60s. i was a hippie for halloween for many consecutive years. all in all, i had a pretty fulfilling adolescence. clearly.

this skirt makes me slightly nostalgic for my tie-dye-crazed youth. i sort of think of it as a grown up version of tie-dye. like if Tie-Dye were a person, and showed up at its 10-year high school reunion, all classy and chic.

i’ll stop saying ‘tie-dye’ now.

bottom line, it’s a perfect summer-transition-to-fall skirt. it’s a perfect length. i like. i lust. end of story.

fly away with me

generally, i don’t gravitate toward juicy couture jewelry. i am alllll about the terry cloth sweat suits, and i’m pretty much always charmed by their clothing, but the jewelry, i just don’t fancy as frequently. it’s just…too much…gem-stone. or something.

but this. oh, this is so dainty and delicate, and i have been lusting for a simple wing necklace forever, and here it is, in all its flighty glory:
